The Permanent Account Number is a unique ten-character alphanumeric code issued by the Income Tax Department of India. Every individual, company, partnership, trust or entity that pays or receives taxable income needs one. The physical laminated card, commonly called the PAN card, carries your name, date of birth, photograph and PAN, and doubles as a widely accepted identity document.
Structure of a PAN
A PAN follows the format ABCDE1234F: - Characters 1-3: alphabetic series. - Character 4: holder type (P for individual, C for company, H for HUF, F for firm, etc.). - Character 5: first letter of the holder's surname. - Characters 6-9: sequential four-digit number. - Character 10: check letter.
Why PAN is essential
PAN is mandatory for: - Filing an income tax return. - Opening a bank account or demat account. - Transactions above specified thresholds: property purchases, vehicle registration, cash deposits above Rs 50,000. - TDS deduction and Form 26AS credit matching. - Starting a SIP or investing in mutual funds. - Applying for a credit card or loan.
Without quoting your PAN, TDS is deducted at the higher rate of 20% instead of the applicable rate. PAN is also the key that links all your financial transactions across banks, brokerages and the tax department.
PAN and Aadhaar linkage
The government has mandated linking PAN with Aadhaar for most individual taxpayers. An unlinked PAN becomes inoperative: TDS is deducted at the higher rate, refunds are not processed, and the card cannot be used for financial transactions. Check and complete the linkage on the Income Tax e-filing portal.
How to apply
- New PAN: apply online through NSDL or UTIITSL portals using Form 49A (for Indian citizens) or Form 49AA (for foreign citizens). E-PAN can be generated instantly using Aadhaar-based e-KYC.
- Correction or reprint: apply for changes in name, address or other details using the same portals. An e-PAN with updated details can be downloaded in minutes.
- Instant e-PAN: available free on the Income Tax e-filing portal for individuals with a valid Aadhaar. The digital PAN is legally equivalent to the physical card.
PAN for NRIs
NRIs can obtain PAN through Form 49A if they have Indian citizenship, or Form 49AA otherwise. PAN is required for NRIs who earn taxable income in India, such as rental income, capital gains from Indian investments or interest from NRO/NRE accounts.
Common issues
- Duplicate PAN: holding more than one PAN is illegal and attracts a penalty of Rs 10,000 under Section 272B. If you have duplicates, surrender the extra one via the NSDL or UTIITSL portal.
- PAN not linked with Aadhaar: results in the PAN becoming inoperative. Complete the linkage online and pay the applicable fee if the deadline has passed.
- Incorrect details on PAN card: apply for a correction before filing your ITR, because mismatched names between PAN and Aadhaar cause processing delays.
