What ChatGPT is and who makes it

ChatGPT is a general-purpose AI assistant built by OpenAI, an American research company that released the first public version in late 2022. It is the product that pushed AI chatbots from a research curiosity into an everyday tool, and for most Indian users it remains the default first stop. You type a question or paste in some text, and it replies in conversational language. That sounds simple, but the range is wide: drafting a client email, explaining a mutual fund factsheet, writing Python, reading a scanned rent agreement, or talking through a problem out loud using voice mode.

The important thing to understand is that ChatGPT is not one model. It is a front end that routes your request to whichever OpenAI model suits the job, and the tier you pay for decides which models and how much of them you get. Free users get a capable model with limits. Paid users get faster responses, deeper reasoning modes, and more generous caps.

Key features in depth

Text generation and editing. This is the core. It drafts, rewrites, shortens, expands, translates and proofreads. It is genuinely good at taking a rough Hinglish note and turning it into a clean professional English email, which is a daily need in most Indian offices.

File and document handling. You can upload PDFs, Word files, Excel sheets, CSVs and images. It will read a 40-page annual report and pull out the bits you asked about, or take a photo of a handwritten shop ledger and convert it into a table. Accuracy on Indian regional scripts in scanned images is decent but not flawless, so check the numbers.

Data analysis. Upload a spreadsheet and it writes and runs code in a sandbox to chart it, clean it or summarise it. For a small business owner who has never written a formula beyond SUM, this is the single most useful feature in the product.

Web browsing and search. Paid tiers, and increasingly the free tier, can search the live web and cite links. Useful for current things like today's FD rates or the latest income tax slab changes, though it still occasionally cites a stale page, so open the source.

Image generation and vision. It creates images from a description and reads images you send. Handy for social posts, thumbnails and quick diagrams.

Voice mode. Real-time spoken conversation. Its Hindi is conversational and understandable, and it copes with Hinglish code-switching better than most. Regional languages like Tamil, Bengali, Marathi and Telugu work but with a noticeably flatter accent and more awkward phrasing than English.

Custom GPTs and Projects. You can save a set of instructions and reference files so you do not re-explain your context in every chat. A CA firm can build one that always answers in the format their partners want.

Memory. It remembers facts about you across chats. Convenient, and also worth reviewing in settings if you have shared anything sensitive.

Pricing tiers explained, with rupee figures

The headline plans are Free, Plus at 20 US dollars a month, and Pro at 200 US dollars a month. Converting at roughly Rs 85 to the dollar, that is about Rs 1,700 a month for Plus and about Rs 17,000 a month for Pro. Treat both as indicative. Your actual card statement will differ because OpenAI bills Indian users in rupees at its own rate and 18 per cent GST is applied on top, which pushes Plus closer to Rs 2,000 in practice.

OpenAI has also run a lower-cost India-specific tier, marketed as ChatGPT Go, priced in the region of Rs 400 a month, with periods where it has been offered free to Indian users as a promotion. Availability and price on that tier have changed more than once, so check the app before assuming it is there.

  • Free. Enough for casual use. You hit limits on the better model after a burst of messages and then get downgraded until the window resets.
  • Plus, about Rs 1,700 indicative. The tier that makes sense for almost everyone who uses it for work. Higher limits, access to reasoning models, faster responses, priority during peak hours.
  • Pro, about Rs 17,000 indicative. Aimed at people who run heavy research or agent workloads all day. For an individual in India this is very hard to justify unless AI output is directly billable to clients.

Payment works with Indian credit and debit cards, though RBI recurring-payment rules mean international card mandates sometimes fail on renewal. UPI support for the subscription has been added and removed at different points, so treat it as available-but-check rather than guaranteed.

The short version: Gemini wins if you live inside Gmail and Docs and want an Android assistant. Claude wins if your day is long documents and careful prose. ChatGPT wins on sheer versatility, and it is the one your colleagues are most likely to already know how to use.

Real workflows it fits

A Mumbai freelance designer uses it to write proposals and scope documents, translate client feedback from voice notes into a task list, and generate first-draft mood-board images before doing the real work in Figma.

A Bengaluru early-stage startup uses it for investor update drafts, competitor summaries, SQL that nobody wants to write, and turning a messy customer-interview transcript into structured themes.

UPSC and CAT aspirants use it as an infinitely patient tutor. Ask it to explain a Polity concept three different ways, generate practice questions on a chapter, or critique an essay answer against the marking pattern. It is genuinely strong at this, with the caveat below about facts.

A small trading business in Jaipur photographs the day's handwritten sales register and asks for a clean table, then a monthly summary. No software purchase, no data entry operator.

A CA firm uses it to draft client advisories in plain English, summarise circulars, and prepare the first version of engagement letters. Partners review everything. It is a drafting assistant, not a signatory.

Limitations to know

It still fabricates. On Indian legal, tax and regulatory specifics it will produce answers that read authoritatively and are wrong, quoting section numbers that do not say what it claims. Never file anything on its say-so. It is weakest exactly where India-specific detail matters most: state-level rules, scheme eligibility, and anything that changed in the last budget.

Regional language quality drops sharply below Hindi. Marathi, Bengali and Tamil output is usable for gist but reads translated. Formal Hindi documents often need heavy editing.

Data residency is a real consideration. Conversations are processed on OpenAI infrastructure outside India. On consumer plans your chats may be used to improve models unless you turn that off in settings. For a CA firm or anyone handling client PAN, financial or health data, that setting matters, and the business tiers with no-training guarantees are the correct choice.

Pricing in dollars means rupee depreciation quietly raises your bill, and card mandate failures on renewal are a common annoyance.

How to get started

  1. Go to chatgpt.com or install the app from the Play Store or App Store.
  2. Sign up with a Google account or your mobile number.
  3. Open Settings and turn off the option that allows your chats to improve the model, if privacy matters to you.
  4. Spend a week on the free tier doing real work, not test questions. Note where you hit limits.
  5. If you hit limits three or four times a week, upgrade. Check whether the cheaper India tier is showing in your account before paying for Plus.
  6. Build one Custom GPT or Project for your most repeated task, with your context and preferred format saved in it.
  7. Set a personal rule: anything with a number, a date or a legal reference gets verified before it leaves your desk.
