Filed your ITR and refreshing the status page every hour? Here is exactly how long each step takes, what every status message means, and when to actually worry — updated for AY 2026-27.

You filed your ITR on 30 or 31 July — right before the deadline. Now you are refreshing the status page and seeing 'Return submitted and pending for processing.' When does it actually move? How long does each stage take? And when should you stop refreshing and start worrying? Here is the realistic timeline for AY 2026-27, based on actual processing patterns.

What happens after you file — the 5-stage pipeline

Once you hit submit and e-verify, your return goes through a specific pipeline. Understanding each stage helps you know whether you are on track or stuck.

### Stage 1: e-Verification (0-30 days)

You have 30 days from the date of filing to e-verify your return. Until verification is complete, your return sits in 'Submitted and pending for e-Verification.' If 30 days pass without e-verification, the return is treated as never filed — you are back to not having filed at all.

If you filed on 31 July and have not e-verified yet, do it today. Use Aadhaar OTP — it takes 60 seconds.

### Stage 2: Basic validation (1-7 days after e-verification)

The system runs automated checks: PAN-Aadhaar link status, TDS matching from Form 26AS, basic arithmetic consistency. Most returns clear this stage within a week. If there is a mismatch — for example, the TDS on your return does not match what Form 26AS shows — the return may be flagged for manual processing, which adds weeks.

### Stage 3: CPC processing (2-6 weeks)

After validation, the return moves to the Centralised Processing Centre (CPC) in Bangalore. This is the longest stage. For simple ITR-1 returns with no refund claims, processing often completes in 2-4 weeks. For returns with refund claims, capital gains, or large deductions, expect 4-8 weeks.

Returns filed in the last week of July generally take longer than those filed in June or early July — the CPC handles millions of returns in a compressed window.

### Stage 4: Intimation under the assessment provision (4-12 weeks)

Once processed, you receive an intimation — a formal notice under the assessment provision of the Income-tax Act, 2025. This intimation tells you one of three things: - No demand, no refund: Your return matches the department's computation exactly. Nothing further is required. - Refund determined: You are owed money. The refund amount is stated. - Demand raised: You owe additional tax. The demand amount and due date are stated.

### Stage 5: Refund credit (1-2 weeks after intimation)

If the intimation shows a refund, the refund is issued within 1-2 weeks to your pre-validated bank account. Once issued, it credits within 2-5 business days.

Realistic timeline — when to expect what

| When you filed | e-Verified | Basic validation | CPC processing | Intimation | Refund credit | |---|---|---|---|---|---| | June 2026 | Done | 1-2 days | 2-3 weeks | 3-5 weeks | 1-2 weeks after | | Mid-July 2026 | Done | 2-4 days | 3-5 weeks | 5-8 weeks | 1-2 weeks after | | 30-31 July 2026 | Urgent | 3-7 days | 4-8 weeks | 8-12 weeks | 1-2 weeks after | | After 31 July (belated) | Done | 3-7 days | 6-12 weeks | 12-16 weeks | 2-4 weeks after |

These are estimates based on historical processing patterns. Actual timelines vary. Returns flagged for manual processing, returns with large refunds, and returns from new PAN holders generally take longer.

What every status message means

Beyond the pipeline stages, you will see specific status messages on the e-filing portal. Here is what each one actually means:

| Status | Meaning | Should you worry? | |---|---|---| | Submitted and pending for e-Verification | e-Verification not yet completed. | Yes — if it has been more than 25 days. e-Verify immediately. | | Successfully e-Verified | e-Verification done. Return queued for processing. | No. This is normal. | | Under processing at CPC | Standard processing stage. This is the longest stage. | No, even if it lasts weeks. | | Return processed | Processing complete. Intimation is being generated. | No. Wait for the intimation. | | Intimation issued | Formal notice sent to your registered email. Check your inbox and the portal. | No — but read the intimation carefully. | | Defective return notice issued | The department found an error. You must correct and refile within 15 days. | Yes — respond within the deadline. | | Refund issued | Refund has been sent to your bank. | No, unless it has been more than 10 business days without credit. | | Refund failed | Bank rejected the refund credit. | Yes — fix the bank issue and request a refund reissue. |

When to actually worry

Most statuses are normal. Here is when you should take action:

- 25+ days without e-verification: Your return will soon expire. e-Verify today. - 8+ weeks in 'Under processing' after e-verification: You can call the CPC helpdesk (1800 103 0025) or submit a grievance on the portal. But for late-July filers, this may still be normal volume delay. - Defective return notice: Respond within 15 days. An unrectified defective return is treated as invalid. - Refund failed: Check bank account pre-validation, name match, and IFSC. Request a refund reissue. - No status visible at all after 10 days of filing: Check if you used the correct PAN to log in. If the return was filed from a different user account, it may not appear. Also check if you actually completed the submission (received an acknowledgement number).

What affects your processing speed

Several factors determine how fast (or slow) your return processes:

- ITR type: ITR-1 processes fastest. ITR-2 and ITR-3 (with capital gains, multiple properties, foreign assets) take longer. - Refund amount: Larger refunds face additional verification before issuance. - TDS mismatch: If the TDS on your return does not match Form 26AS exactly, the return goes to manual review. - First-time filer: New PAN holders may face additional verification. - Previous year demands: If a prior year's demand is outstanding, the current year's refund may be adjusted against it.

How to speed things up (within your control)

- e-Verify immediately. The single biggest delay is people who file but forget to e-verify. - Match TDS exactly. Cross-check every TDS entry against Form 26AS before submitting. Do not estimate or round. - Validate your bank account in advance. Go to Profile > My Bank Account on the portal and ensure your account is validated BEFORE you expect a refund. Refunds cannot credit to unvalidated accounts. - Respond to notices fast. If you get a defective return notice or a demand, respond within the deadline. Delays cascade.

Frequently Asked Questions

### I filed ITR on 31 July. When will it be processed? For returns filed in the last week of July, expect CPC processing to take 4-8 weeks. The intimation typically arrives 8-12 weeks after filing. This is normal — the CPC handles a surge in the final week. Your return is not stuck; it is in a queue.

### Why is my ITR still showing 'under processing' after 6 weeks? If your return is ITR-1, with no refund, and was e-verified on time, 6 weeks is on the longer side but still within normal range for peak-season filings. If it exceeds 8 weeks, contact the CPC helpdesk. If your return has large deductions, capital gains, or a significant refund, longer processing is expected.

### Will I get my refund before Diwali? For June and early July filers, refunds typically arrive by August-September. For 30-31 July filers, refunds often arrive in October-November. For belated filers, it can stretch into the next year. These are estimates, not guarantees.

### My friend who filed after me already got their refund. Why haven't I? Processing is not strictly first-in-first-out. Returns are processed in batches — ITR-1 before ITR-2, no-refund before refund, and automated processing before manual review. Your friend may have had a simpler return or filed an ITR-1 while you filed ITR-2.

### I got a demand notice but my calculation shows a refund. What do I do? Compare the department's computation (shown in the intimation) with your return, line by line. Common causes: TDS not matched, deduction disallowed, income reported in a different head. If the department is correct, pay the demand. If you believe you are correct, file a rectification request.

### Can I file a revised return while the original is still being processed? Yes. If you discover an error in a return that is still under processing, you can file a revised return. The revision window is the same as the belated return window: up to 31 December 2026. The revised return replaces the original.
