Altcoin is short for alternative coin. It refers to every cryptocurrency other than Bitcoin. The term emerged because Bitcoin was the first cryptocurrency, and everything that came after was seen as an alternative to it.
Types of altcoins
Altcoins are not one category. They span a wide range of designs and purposes.
| Type | Examples | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Platform coins | Ethereum, Solana, Cardano | Run smart contracts and dApps |
| Stablecoins | USDT, USDC, DAI | Price-pegged to a fiat currency |
| Meme coins | Dogecoin, Shiba Inu | Community-driven, often speculative |
| Utility tokens | Chainlink, Filecoin | Access a specific service or network |
| Privacy coins | Monero, Zcash | Enhanced transaction privacy |
| Governance tokens | Uniswap (UNI), Aave | Vote on protocol decisions |
Why altcoins exist
Bitcoin was designed primarily as a decentralised payment system. Many altcoins attempt to improve upon Bitcoin's limitations, such as transaction speed, energy consumption or programmability, or to serve entirely different use cases like DeFi, NFTs or decentralised storage.
Altcoins and risk
Most altcoins are significantly more volatile and less liquid than Bitcoin. Thousands of altcoins have launched and failed. Before investing, research the project's team, whitepaper, use case, tokenomics and community. Be especially cautious of projects that promise guaranteed returns.
Tax treatment in India
All altcoins are treated as Virtual Digital Assets under Section 115BBH of the Income Tax Act. Gains are taxed at a flat 30% with no deductions beyond cost of acquisition. A 1% TDS under Section 194S applies to transfers above the threshold. Losses on one altcoin cannot be offset against gains on another.
How to evaluate an altcoin
- Market capitalisation: higher market cap generally means more liquidity and stability.
- Use case: does the project solve a real problem?
- Team and development: is the code actively maintained?
- Tokenomics: what is the supply schedule and distribution?
- Community and adoption: real users matter more than social media hype.
